Many homeowners are looking to have several rooms in their home renovated, but sometimes, they prefer to have the renovation completed in stages. These homeowners may feel like they don’t have the budget to do a complete renovation in one phase, or are concerned about the amount of time and work that a full renovation will entail.
If you’re setting your sights on a future renovation, and are wondering what part of your home you should start renovating first, Master Edge Homes is happy to help! Here’s what you need to know about staging a renovation, and whether or not it’s the optimal solution for your renovation needs.
Even if a client is looking for a “staged” renovation (i.e. the renovation process happens in stages, as opposed to all at once), an overall design schematic must be drawn to give the client and Master Edge Homes a better idea of what the end result will look like.
When we understand the complete scope of a project, we’re able to determine how the renovation will proceed and what it will look like once it’s complete. This will help our renovation team understand the impact of the full design, and determine what adjustments will need to be made in order to create consistency throughout the design process.
Depending on what part of your house is being renovated, aspects of the original design will need to be changed. For example, if you’re looking to renovate your bathroom, the location of the toilet, the plumbing, and lighting fixtures will need to be adjusted in order to fit the rest of the planned renovations.
In the case of additions to an existing structure, changes in the flooring, ceilings, and other uniform aspects of the home will need to be made in order to make the existing structure consistent with the addition that is being built.
If you’re planning on renovating in stages, it’s best to renovate certain floors before others. This prevents issues with protecting certain areas of the house, such as the stairs between the main and top floor, during the renovation process. It’s for this reason that we recommend either renovating the basement or second floor first before moving to the main floor.
Ultimately, renovating from the bottom and top floor first will prevent any issues involving the protection of stairs, closet spaces, or banisters.
The idea that it costs less to renovate a house in stages is actually a misconception. In reality, the set-up and take down of all of the equipment in a staged renovation will add up, racking up the final bill.
Although we understand some of our clients’ reasons for doing a staged renovation, we highly suggest getting the full renovation done in one phase. Not only will this cut down on time – it will also reduce the administration and staging costs associated with a staged renovation.
