Winter Preparation for Your Markham Home
While it’s quite difficult to be prepared for everything winter may bring our way, there are a number of things we can do to make its impact a little more bearable.
- Clean your gutters of leaves and debris. By doing this you eliminate the potential of ice forming, which can get under your shingles, and ultimately lead to leaks inside your home.
- Seal the drafts coming from your doors and windows. Installing weatherstripping can make a huge difference! It is a great idea to check the caulking on the outside of your windows and doors as well. While these are quick fixes, a long-term solution would be to replace your windows or doors. This option is, of course, more costly, but you will reap the benefits with lower heating bills.
- If you start your car in your garage, do so with the garage door open to the outside. Take extra caution with checking the seals around the door leading into your home. A carbon monoxide detector would also be good to consider if you do not already have one installed in your home.
- Change the filter on your furnace. This should be done on a regular basis to make sure it is working efficiently. If you want to go an extra step, have it serviced by a professional.
- If you don’t already have a humidifier, now is the time to consider it! The moisture balance in your home and body will improve dramatically. Less cracks will occur, as the woodwork in your home shrinks when it is dry, just like your skin!
- Let us not forget the ice storm of 2013/2014 – have canned goods, water and candles on hand. Check on your neighbours when possible during poor weather conditions.
