The saying “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” isn’t just about your health; it also applies to the health of your home.

When renovating or custom building your dream home, there are a variety of different factors that may distract you from investing your money into the most important areas of your home. Ensuring that you’ve invested in those areas that will protect and provide you continued comfort for years to come is crucial. Insulation is one of these areas.

Regardless of how important insulation is to preventing the loss of heat in your home, it is one area I often see left undone, yet one of the easiest ways to protect your investment. Here are a few things to keep in mind when trying to control monthly expenses and ensure comfort for you and your family.

When a home is properly insulated, airflow between the interior and the exterior of the home is prohibited. When building a home or having an addition put on to your existing home, insulation is a must!

Although there are many different types of insulation, a knowledgeable professional will advise you that the most cost effective material to use is fiberglass. Fiberglass is a type of insulation that prevents cold air from entering the home.

With advancements in technology a new product called outsulation has become more commonly used within the industry. Outsulation is essentially a Styrofoam material that is attached to the exterior of the home and prevents cold air from entering the house.

Windows and doors are other areas that should not be ignored. A good window will help with the insulation of your home as it will maintain a healthy airflow and regulate sound travel. Although there are a variety of windows, a double paned window is a suitable choice that can sustain mild to harsher climates.

Choosing the proper materials and products that will provide you with optimum comfort and value is only the first step.  You must then ensure the installation is completed properly.  As with any material or product, if they are not installed correctly they will not perform as expected. It is important to select a contractor who is able to advise you on the proper products and follow through with a quality installation.

When you invest in the right areas of your home, you are not only protecting your asset, ensuring your monthly heating and cooling costs are consistent, but investing in your dream of comfort and relaxation for years to come.
